ok, this could mean a lot of different things.
Step 1: First, let's tackle the obvious: Make sure you're computer isn't muted, make sure the speakers are ON, and make sure the volume is turned up. Now, play some music and try turning the volume up. If it works, great. If not, continue to step 2.
Step 2: Restart your computer, try the above suggestion again. Sometimes, simple problems can be fixed just by rebooting. Repeat Step 1. If this doesn't work, continue to Step 3.
Step 3: If that doesn't help, we need to determine if it's your speakers or the sound card. Get a pair of headphones, plug them into the computers Audio Out plug, turn the volume down, and play some music while gradually increasing the volume. If you get sound through the headphones, your speakers need to be replaced. If this doesn't help, continue to Step 4.
Step 4: Finally, if none of the above helped, you can try restoring your computer to a previous date. Click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Sytem Restore. Click ';Restore my computer to an earlier time,'; click next. Now, pick a day in a month where you remember your speakers working fine. Click restore. The computer will begin the restoration process and a progress indicator should show on the screen. At the end of the process, the computer will reboot. If the computer did NOT restore the point you selected (it will tell you if it doesn't), pick a different date and try it again. Once it's restored, repeat Step 1.
If this doesn't work, it's likely that your Sound Card is broken and needs to be replaced. If you take your computer to Circuit City, Best Buy, CompUSA, or some other computer store, they can diagnose and correct the problem for you. Additionally, you can call those stores to find out how much the card and installation will cost.Need free advice on why I no longer get sound from my speakers on my windows 98 computer?
If you're lucky and my suggestions work, let me know. Hopefully, one of those will fix it and you won't have to get a new sound card. By the way, sound cards tend to go bad by power surges, make sure your computer is on a good surge protector (a good one will usually run between $20 and $40).

Maybe you accidentally muted the sound on your windows media player. Happened to me ...just click sound icon on your task bar and check if the ';mute'; is checked off.....
Why continue to use a non-supported operating system. Once you are sure that your hardware is working properly install UBUNTU.
It's a free reliable and up to date operating system. Also you get all the software that you will ever need FREE!!!
You can get it at http://www.ubuntu.com
If your computer has 256MB of RAM, or more, get a full version. If not, get XUBUNTU.
Maybe you have short in your speaker cord or it actually loose in the back.

First check your sound card, then your connections and finally your speakers.More then likely it's the sound card you might also want to move up in the world on your os.
Try clicking on Start, then right click on My Computer, select properties, hardware, device manager, find your Audio Controller, right click on that and select Update Driver.
Ensure your speakers are plugged in, the volume is up and they are working. Check the speaker icon in the corner of you screen and ensure your PC volume is turned up.
Check your device manager to ensure that everything is functioning properly
Right click My Computer -%26gt; Properties -%26gt; Hardware -%26gt; Device Manager -%26gt; + Sound And audio devices.
Right click the sound device and left click properties and it will tell you if there is an issue.
If there is no issue, trying redownloading the driver from the manufactor's website.
