I'm going to get a kitten for Christmas and I haven't had a kitten for many years. Any advice , or tips? The kitten will be 8 or 9 weeks old , is it easy potty training kittens? What are some good toys or food for them? Is it easy to crate train them?Any advice? I'm getting a kitten tomorrow... ?
Cats are the easiest thing in the world to potty train. Make sure you pick a good spot that's easy to get to for the litter box. When the cat comes in the home, just plop her in the box and she'll know where to go from then on.
Make sure you have put anything bad for the cat up or away. Check all your houseplants to see if they're toxic to cats. If you're having a lot of people around, find a quiet room you can put the kitty in after it's been fawned over by everyone, so the cat doesn't get scared. Put the litter box, food and water bowl in that room for now so it has what it needs until you can let it out to roam the house.
If by crate training you mean a cat carrier for taking to the vet, then put the carrier in the quiet room and leave it open. Make it comfortable with a soft towel or blanket and let the cat get used to laying in it without going anywhere.
Definitely get food made specifically for the kitten stage of cat growth. Dry food is best as it helps keep their teeth clean and strong. Canned food can be given as a treat on occasion.
Cats react differently to different toys. Some cats won't play with them at all, some love them. A good cat toy to get is the plastic circle that has a pingpong ball trapped inside. The cat chases the ball around and around the circle.
Take it slow and try to make it as calm as you can when you bring kitty home. Don't get upset if she acts scared or hides for a while, that's normal. It can take weeks sometimes before the cat feels safe and secure enough to wander around, depending on the cat.
Congratulations and good luck!Any advice? I'm getting a kitten tomorrow... ?
Congrats!
cats/kittens come potty trained already if they've spent the 1st 8 weeks with their mom's.
I would suggest that the first 6months to a year is crucial for establishing ground rules with your cat. whatever you do now will impact how you do things later on. sounds scarry but this is the most developing they do personality/physically/emotionally in that first year.
I would say that the first year defines their personalities. Whether they are needy, or independent, aloof unapproachable, or cuddly and caring.
my suggestions, get used to trimming their claws, be gentle but be firm with your cat getting her used to having their paws messed with.
learn how to trim just the tips of their claws. I typically just blunt them off so they arent sharp. saves me on furniture, and leather shoes, jackets.
hold them alot. get the cat used to having people pick them up and hold them.
A harness and leash would be good to get used to.
and maybe a bath once a month. Ive let my cat go without a bath
for a couple of years now, but I may just start that back up again.
scratching post, must have.
those are my suggestions.
good luck
alright, your older cat may care or it may just ignore the kitten. for the introduction, i would recommend putting them in the same room. and let them sniff each other, if it doesn't go well( fighting perhaps) remove them and try again the next day. your other cat may become very territorial. where are you getting her? she's most likely already litter box trained, my cat was at 3 months and my friends cat was at 2.5 months. Science diet is the BEST cat food out there. i don't recommend Iams. My cat doesn't like her kitty carrier very much, but we just force her into it. try taking her places in it, so she gets used to it at a early age. my cat loves cat nip mouses, she still plays with them on occasions. get her a bigger little box, she will grow into it. another thing about your older cat, sometimes they will just accept the fact that they have another cat in the house, if they don't just try to show her affection too. hope i helped! and congrats on your little kitty. merry Christmas!
Shoelaces, cat condos/towers, and little cubes with big holes in them for the cat to hide in are great toys!
Cats are very easy and fun, they are very smart learners, although I've never had to litter box train my cat because we got him from a foster home But all i had to do is set him in his litter box and he knew what it was :)
I wish you good luck :)
kittens are quick learners. as soon as you bring her in the house show her the litter box and food and water, keep them in the same room, we adopted an eight week old that had never even seen a litter box the first couple of times he used the floor but it was so cute watching him in the big litter box, also watch because it might try to eat the litter, because they do not know what it is. have fun with your new baby.
potty training a cat? either they use a litterbox or they live outside. they like catnip toys and balls of yarn. crate train them? never heard of that! cats don't like being locked up a kitten might even escape through the bars.
